«L’Incroyable» and «La Merveilleuse» personified, during the 18th century, a real caricature of their society. These strange characters laughed at the nobility, the bourgeoisie and the clergy by their audacious getups and attitudes. The engraver, Louis- Charles Ruotte caricatured, in turn, «L’Incroyable» and «La Merveilleuse» and create the engraving Le Boeuf à la mode representing an ox dressed in a hat, feathers and jewels.
Inspired by this piece of art, the pattern of this collection confront a world of luxury to the physical appearances of strange animals. Like a La Fontaine fable, this pattern represents little skits which relate the story of the ugliness in the beauty, of poverty in the wealth. They symbolize the worse hidden behind the most beautiful assets and manners.
«L’Incroyable» et «La Merveilleuse» du XVIIIème siècle incarnaient des pamphlets vivants de leurs sociétés. Ces intrigants personnages, véritables caricatures, singeaient la noblesse, la bourgeoisie et le clergé par leur accoutrement et leur audace. L’artiste Louis-Charles Ruotte caricatura à son tour ces Incroyables et ces Merveilleuses et créa Le Bœuf à la mode, une gravure représentant un bœuf habillé d’un chapeau, de plumes et de bijoux.
Inspiré par cette œuvre, les motifs de la collection confrontent un univers noble et opulent à des animaux aux traits grossiers. A la manière d’une fable de La Fontaine, ces motifs représentent des petites saynètes et portraits satyriques qui racontent l’histoire de la laideur dans la beauté et du pauvre dans le riche. Ils illustrent ce que les plus belles richesses et les plus belles manières peuvent cacher de pire.
